A minor port at the yard can handle container ships, and an 18,000-tonne shiplift is being installed to facilitate ship construction. The yard will also have facilities for building offshore platforms, drilling rigs, and FPSOs (floating production, storage and offloading unit).

L&T plans to invest ₹4,000 crore in the facility in the first phase, which will start rolling out ships by January 2012. The proposed facility is expected to employ close to 10,000 people when fully operational.

India Repairs Royal Fleet Auxiliary Vessels

In a historic first, India's Kattupalli Shipyard has repaired two Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels, RFA Argus and RFA Lyme Bay, in March 2024.

The ships arrived at the Kattupalli Shipyard after conducting exercises with the Indian Navy as they entered the Arabian Sea.

RFA Argus is the RN's Primary Casualty Receiving Ship, while RFA Lyme Bay is a Bay-class Landing Ship Dock (Auxiliary) – LSD (A).

Kattupalli Shipyard is a large modern shipyard, ideal for the repair and maintenance of warships and naval auxiliaries.

It features a ship lift and transfer system with a lifting capacity of 21,050 tonnes, with a platform measuring 200m x 45m.

The two RFAs will operate in the Indo-Pacific region, conducting training exercises and a wide engagement with allies and other partners.

This is not the first time the US Navy has taken advantage of the benefits associated with repairing its surface vessels on deployment in this part of the world at this Indian shipyard.

The USN first used L&T Shipbuilding's Kattupalli Shipyard in August 2022 for work on the Military Sealift Command's Combat Logistics Force's operated Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo ship USNS Charles Drew (T-AKE-10).

The USN has since returned to the shipyard for repairs on other vessels, including the Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo ship USNS Matthew Perry (T-AKE-9) and the Safeguard-class rescue and salvage vessel USNS Salvor (T-ARS-52).

The Indian shipyard was awarded a five-year MSRA (Master Shipyard Repair Agreement) by the USN following the successful completion of these repairs.

US and Royal Navy Involvement

The US and Royal Navy have been actively engaging with India's Kattupalli Shipyard for their repair and maintenance needs.

In August 2022, the US Navy used the shipyard for work on the USNS Charles Drew, a Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo ship. This marked the beginning of a long-term partnership between the US Navy and L&T Shipbuilding.

The US Navy has since returned to the shipyard in 2023 for repairs on two more vessels, the USNS Matthew Perry and the USNS Salvor. This is a testament to the quality of service provided by the shipyard.

US Navy

The US Navy has been actively engaging with India's shipbuilding industry. In August 2022, the USNS Charles Drew was sent to Kattupalli Shipyard for an 11-day repair and allied services work.

The US Navy has been building strong ties with India, with a major outcome being the US-India 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in April 2022. This dialogue led to the US Navy sending its first ship to India for repairs.

The USNS Matthew Perry underwent a similar repair and upgrade process from 11 to 27 March 2023. It's impressive how quickly these repairs can be done, with the ship returning to operations soon after.

The US Navy has also signed a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) with Larsen & Toubro for a period of 5 years. This agreement allows for the pre-approval of shipyards to repair US naval vessels.

Royal Navy

The Royal Navy has been making waves in the Indo-Pacific region, and it's not just about the naval vessels they're deploying. In March 2024, maintenance of RFA Argus and RFA Lyme Bay was undertaken at the Kattupalli Shipyard in India, marking the first time a Royal Navy ship has arrived in an Indian shipyard for maintenance.

RFA Argus and RFA Lyme Bay are quite the duo - RFA Argus is the RN's Primary Casualty Receiving Ship, while RFA Lyme Bay is a Bay-class Landing Ship Dock (Auxiliary) – LSD (A). They're part of the RN's Littoral response Group – South.

The ships were escorted by HMS Diamond as they transited through the Red Sea to reach India, and later, in April 2024, LRG(S) participated in Maritime Partnership Exercise with Indian Navy's Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean, including stealth frigate INS Sahyadri.
