The Urengoy gas field is a massive natural gas field located in Western Siberia, Russia. It's one of the largest gas fields in the world, covering an area of over 2,000 square kilometers.

The field was discovered in 1966 and has been in production since 1978. It's a significant contributor to Russia's economy and energy production.

Production

The Urengoy gas field is a massive conventional gas field located in Russia, with over 10 trillion cubic meters of total deposits. As of 2021, it had recovered more than 90% of its reserves.

Its output was significantly lower than its peak from 1985 to 1996, but it still accounted for 3% of the country's natural gas output. This is a remarkable feat, considering the field's production has been scaled back.

The Urengoy gas field extracts a substantial amount of natural gas per year, with 230 billion cubic meters being produced annually. This is a testament to the field's enduring productivity.

  • More than 2,800 wells
  • Two oil fields
  • 22 gas treatment units
  • 20 booster compressor stations
  • Five gas cooling stations
  • Two compressor stations to handle associated petroleum gas
  • A condensate pumping station

Gazprom has made significant investments in the Urengoy gas field, including the commissioning of two additional booster compressor stations in September 2021. This move aims to maintain peak production volumes and meet the higher gas demand in Europe during the winter.

Geology and Location

The Urengoy gas field is located near Novy Urengoy, approximately 3,500km east of Moscow, in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug of Western Siberia, Russia.

The field is situated in the northern West Siberia Basin and spans over 12,000km², with most of it located beyond the Arctic Circle.

The Urengoy field is operated by Gazprom and has been in production since 1978, with the discovery of the field dating back to 1966.

It is considered to be the world's second-largest natural gas field, with the C1 (explored) reserves of the Achimov deposits being more than a trillion cubic meters of gas and 400 million tonnes of condensate.

The field stretches for over 230km from north to south and has a width ranging from 30km to 60km, with Block 1А located in the south-eastern part of the field and spanning more than 280km.

The Urengoy field contains three main hydrocarbon horizons: Cenomanian, Valanginian, and Achimov, with the Cenomanian deposits located at a depth of 1,000m to 1,700m and consisting mainly of methane.

The Valanginian deposits lie at depths ranging from 1,700m to 3,200m and differ from the Cenomanian deposits due to a higher content of ethane, propane, and gas condensate.

The Achimov deposits are present at depths ranging from 3,500m to 4,000m, with a more complex geological structure compared to the Cenomanian and Valanginian deposits.

Development Plans

The Urengoy gas field has several development plans in place to tap into its vast reserves. Achimov blocks 4A and 5A are expected to produce 14bcm of dry gas a year.

Gazpromneft-Zapolyarye has planned to drill two gas-condensate production wells at Block 3A of the Urengoyskoye field to target the deeper Achimov deposits. The drilling of these two wells will provide valuable data to help detect specific geological features of the Achimov deposits.

A total of 32 high-tech horizontal wells are planned to be drilled at Block 3A to develop the Achimov deposits. This development plan aims to achieve an annual peak production of 5bcm of gas and up to 1.5 million tonnes of gas condensate by 2024.

Infrastructure

The Urengoy gas field has a significant pipeline infrastructure that plays a crucial role in its operations. The SRTO-Torzhok gas pipeline, which originates from the Urengoyskoye field, runs for 2,200km to connect with Russia’s Unified Gas Supply System at Torzhok.

This pipeline was brought on stream in 2006, marking a major milestone in the field's development. The pipeline reached its design capacity of 28.5bcm in 2012, with a total of 13 compressor stations along the route.

These compressor stations have a combined capacity of 968MW, which is essential for maintaining the pipeline's pressure and flow rate. The pipeline's infrastructure is a testament to the field's growing importance in Russia's energy sector.
