Proton AG is a company that truly cares about its users' privacy and freedom. They're on a mission to create a better world where people can communicate and access information without fear of being watched or controlled.

Proton AG's products are designed with security and anonymity in mind, allowing users to browse the internet privately and securely. They're not just a company, they're a guardian of your online freedom.

Their email service, ProtonMail, is a prime example of this. It's an end-to-end encrypted email service that's free from government and corporate snooping. This means your emails are safe from prying eyes, even if you're using a public Wi-Fi network.

ProtonMail's encryption is top-notch, using AES-256 encryption to keep your emails secure. This is the same encryption standard used by banks and other financial institutions, so you can trust that your emails are safe.

Data Centers

Proton Mail maintains and owns its own server hardware and network, avoiding the use of a third-party provider.

This approach ensures maximum control and security over their infrastructure.

Proton operates data centers in Switzerland, Germany, and Norway, with a total of three locations as of December 2024.

The data centers are strategically located to provide a secure and reliable service.

Proton's data centers in Lausanne and Attinghausen are designed to be highly redundant, with features such as load balancing across web, mail, and SQL servers.

Each data center also has a redundant power supply and uses Linux and other open-source software exclusively.

The use of full disk encryption on hard drives adds an extra layer of security to the data centers.

Proton's commitment to using open-source software ensures that their systems are transparent and customizable.

The data center in Attinghausen is particularly secure, located in a former military bunker under 1,000 meters of granite rock.

Security and Privacy

Proton AG prioritizes security and privacy, and it's great to see a company taking a strong stance on these issues.

Proton complies with law enforcement requests that are valid under Swiss law, but it's worth noting that most product-related data is end-to-end encrypted and not retained.

Certain account information, such as client IP addresses and recovery email addresses, may be disclosed to authorities upon receipt of a valid Swiss court order.

In 2024, Proton received 11,023 requests for user information, of which it complied with 10,368 and contested 655.

Proton VPN received 53 requests for user information in 2024 and did not comply with any of them.

Proton's commitment to digital freedom is admirable, and it's refreshing to see a company that believes in giving users control over their online data.

By joining the RIPE NCC in 2014, Proton gained more direct control over the surrounding Internet infrastructure, which is a significant step towards promoting digital freedom.

Accused of Spying on Users and Helping Law Enforcement

ProtonMail was accused of spying on users and helping law enforcement in 2019.

According to Steiger's tweets, ProtonMail's CEO, Walder, stated that the service voluntarily offers its help to authorities and monitors users almost in real time.

Steiger emphasized that ProtonMail has access to metadata, even with end-to-end encryption, which can be valuable for law enforcement agencies.

ProtonMail is based in Switzerland and uses this as a marketing advantage, citing strict Swiss privacy laws.

However, Walder allegedly stated that ProtonMail voluntarily helps law enforcement agencies, which contradicts the service's claims.

The company responded by stating that they comply with Swiss laws, but not in a way that contradicts their own rules.

They also clarified that information is only provided to law enforcement agencies as part of criminal investigations with a warrant available.
