Each operation is unique, as it is always exclusively linked to one BoM, and can be reused when configuring a new BoM, with the Copy Existing Operations feature.

In the Create Operations box, give the operation a name, and specify the Work Center and the Default Duration settings.

The Work Sheet types that can be added are: Text (with a Description); PDF files; and Google Slide presentations.

You can choose to type instructions in the Description text field, or attach a file or a Google Slide with public access to share a link.

To add more operations, click Save & New and repeat the same steps above to configure another operation.

Here's a quick rundown of the operation fields:

By following these steps and understanding the operation fields, you'll be well on your way to setting up Operations Steps that will streamline your manufacturing process.

Up a

Up a level, we need to consider the hierarchy of operations and steps. The first step is to identify the root cause of the issue, which is often at the top level of the hierarchy.

A clear understanding of the problem is essential to determine the next steps. The root cause analysis can take time and effort, but it's a crucial step in resolving the issue.

The next level up is to assess the impact of the problem on the organization or project. This involves evaluating the effects on stakeholders, resources, and timelines.

Adding By-Products

Adding By-Products is a great way to capture the residual products created during production.

A by-product is a residual product created during production in addition to the main product of a BoM.

To add by-products to a BoM, first enable the By-Products feature in the Manufacturing app's Configuration section.

You can enable the By-Products feature by going to the Operations section and ticking the checkbox for By-Products.

Once the feature is enabled, add by-products to a BoM by clicking the By-products tab.

Click Add a line, and fill in the By-product, Quantity, and Unit of Measure.

You can specify a Produced in Operation for the by-product, which is especially useful if your BoM has configured operations.

Just name the by-product, indicate the Quantity and the Unit of Measure, and if necessary, specify the operation it's produced from in the Produced in Operation field.

You can save your changes and add as many by-products as you want to a BoM.

By-products can be added from the By-products tab, and you can choose to specify the operation it's produced from if your BoM has Operations steps.

Just remember to save your changes after adding a by-product to a BoM.

Product Variants

You can assign a Bill of Materials (BoM) to specific product variants in Odoo. BoMs can be assigned to product variants with two setup options available.

To assign product variants to BoMs, the feature must be enabled in Inventory ‣ Configuration ‣ Settings, under the Products section by selecting Variants and clicking Save. This is a crucial step before you can start assigning BoMs to product variants.

Credit: youtube.com, Manufacture with Product Variants | Odoo MRP

BoMs can be created for one product variant by specifying the Product Variant every time a new BoM is created. This is the first method for creating BoMs for product variants.

Alternatively, you can create one master BoM that contains all components and specify which variant each component applies to using the Apply on Variants column. This is the second method for creating BoMs for product variants.

The Apply on Variants column is hidden by default and can be accessed by clicking on the Additional Options menu icon at the right of the Components tab. This column is essential for specifying which variant each component applies to.

You can use the same BoM to describe multiple variants of a product by specifying which component lines are needed for the manufacture of each variation. This approach is useful when you have multiple variants of a product that share many components.

In this case, you can specify several variants for each line, but if the variant is not specified, the line will be used for all of them. This flexibility makes it easy to manage multiple product variants with a single BoM.

Adding Routes and Resources

Adding routes to a BOM is a straightforward process that can be done by enabling routings from Configuration ‣ Settings.

To add a routing to your BOM, you can choose one from the dropdown list or create one on the fly.

One routing can be added to several BOMs, making it a flexible and efficient way to manage your manufacturing operations.

To define or set up a work operation or step wherein each component is going to be consumed, you may use the Consumed in Operation option under the Components tab.

You can also define the operation wherein the product is going to be produced just right under the Miscellaneous tab with the Produced at Operation field.
