History

Walden Media was founded in 2000 by Micheal Flaherty and Cary Granat as a movie, television, publishing, and Internet enterprise.

The two founders were housemates at Tufts University before following different paths, and later reunited to form the company.

In May 2001, the company's formation was officially announced, marking the beginning of Walden Media's journey.

During the summer of 2001, Walden entered into their first film deals, partnering with Phoenix Pictures to finance and co-produce Holes, an adaptation of the children's book of the same name.

In December 2001, Walden announced that they had acquired the rights to produce films based on The Chronicles of Narnia.

Anschutz Entertainment Group purchased a majority stake in the company in late 2001, leaving the founders as minority shareholders.

Walden entered into a partnership with Summit Entertainment in February 2002, who would pre-sell their films internationally.

In September 2002, Walden signed a two-year first-look agreement with The Walt Disney Company, following their acquisition of the distribution rights to Ghosts of the Abyss in North America and the United Kingdom, and Holes in a majority of territories.

Walden's first film, Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey, was released theatrically in September 2002.

In July 2004, Walden signed a five-picture production deal with 20th Century Fox.

The company, now named "Fox-Walden", announced the release of its first four films in May 2007, following an extension to their partnership with Fox Filmed Entertainment in August 2006.

Michael Bostick, formerly of Imagine Films, was hired as creative officer in March 2008, replacing Cary Granat as co-CEO.

Walden Media created a joint publishing venture with HarperCollins during the same year, called Walden Pond Press.

On October 2, 2008, it was announced that Fox-Walden would reduce its staff and cease operations as a standalone company, being folded into 20th Century Fox as a division.

Walden Media is expanding its feature-film activities to finance a slate of high-end, star-driven commercial projects.

The company will finance its expansion through a replenishing media fund, backed by Anschutz Film Group, which allows it to not only finance production of feature films, TV series, and animated content but also provide P&A funding and gap financing for select projects.

Walden is also revamping its executive suite with Frank Smith becoming the chief operating officer and overseeing all aspects of Walden's operations.

The company is open to partnering with any distributor on projects it co-finances and co-produces with outside partners.

Walden maintains a first look deal with 20th Century Fox for projects developed exclusively in-house.

This move is expected to give Walden more flexibility in sourcing projects and material.

Frank Smith noted that the restructuring reflects how the industry is working today, allowing Walden to leverage its capital more efficiently.

The company is also hiring new talent, including Naia Cucukov as VP of development and production, and Ryan Jones as CFO.

Education Program

Walden Media is unique in that it partners with teachers, museums, and national organizations to develop educational programs and materials.

These programs are designed to supplement their films and the original events or novels that inspire them.

Walden Media offers in-class teaching tools like educational guides and teacher kits.

They also sponsor seminars and forums for teachers to discuss their practice and share ideas on using media in the classroom.

Directors, writers, and stars of the productions participate in these events.

2nd Logo (Jan 22, 2010)

The 2nd Logo of Walden Media was introduced on January 22, 2010, and it features a redone version of the previous logo with a gold ripple effect, blue text, and a white light streaking across the "N" and "M".

This logo is set in a different lake environment with a rock bouncing from the right instead of the left, and it hops away from the camera. A sunrise is also added to the logo, shining bright as the rock makes its third jump.

A 1.14:1 open matte version of this logo exists, which can be found on a 35mm uncropped film scan print of Tooth Fairy, the first film to use this logo.

On The Baby-Sitters Club, the logo is shortened, while on some films like Parental Guidance, Playing with Fire, and Rumble, the logo cuts in rather than fading in. In some cases, it cuts out as well.

Here are some notable variations of the 2nd Logo of Walden Media:

On Wonder and Dora and the Lost City of Gold, the streak is absent, and on The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and Parental Guidance, the sun's shine is less bright, allowing the viewer to see the rock make one last jump before sinking into the lake.
