News and Events

TPC Group's facility in Texas experienced a power outage due to a late-morning thunderstorm, leading to a flare stack fire that produced a dense plume of smoke visible from at least 18 miles away.

The plant's communications manager, Gwendolyn Kimble, explained that the flare system is used to burn off hazardous gases in emergency situations.

A plume of black smoke was visible from miles away in Houston, Texas, causing concern about air pollution.

Fortunately, air pollution monitoring at the plant's fence line showed no impact outside the facility, according to Kimble.

Power was restored to the facility in the afternoon, and the plume dissipated shortly after.

Port Neches Explosions

The Port Neches explosions were a series of explosions that occurred on November 27, 2019, at the TPC's Port Neches butadiene manufacturing plant.

60,000 residents were evacuated within four miles of the facility, including parts of Port Neches, Nederland, Groves, and Port Arthur, Texas.

The mandatory evacuation was lifted on Friday morning, but local residents reported respiratory, eye, and throat pain caused by the acrid smoke from the fire.

Four workers were injured, but none seriously.

In 2018, the Port Neches facility released the second-highest illegal amount of cancer-causing butadiene in Texas.

The November 27 explosions were part of a series of major explosions in 2019 in Texas's petrochemical corridor.

Environmental advocacy organizations helped organize residents to demand more consequential action from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) than what they described as the typical inadequate fines imposed by the TCEQ for violations by the petrochemical industry.

In response to the detailed testimony by residents concerning the November 27 explosions and fire, the TCEQ referred the matter for criminal prosecution.
