Pivot Airlines launched in late May, just a few months after the COVID-19 pandemic hit in mid-March. The airline was created from the ashes of Air Georgian, which flew 62,000 flights a year under a capacity purchase agreement with Air Canada.

The new airline resulted from an asset purchase agreement that was approved by the court through a process called a Notice of Intention, similar to a Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act process. This process allowed Pivot Airlines to acquire the necessary assets to start operations.

Pivot Airlines' business plan had to "pivot" due to the pandemic, shifting from a regional airline to a leaner charter operation focused on workforce logistic charters and ACMI contracts. This change was a significant adjustment for the airline.

The airline's CEO, Eric Edmondson, has launched three air operator certificates and two approved maintenance organizations before, but this has been the most challenging by far. Edmondson and his team had to navigate not only the legal restructuring process but also the global pandemic and its impacts on aviation regulation.
