Company History

Olvi's centenary year was 1878, a significant milestone in the company's history.

In 1878, Olvi acquired a majority holding in the Latvian company A/S Cesu Alus and a minority holding in the Lithuanian company AB Ragutis.

Olvi revolutionised the cider product group by launching the world's first light cider, FIZZ Light Perry.

The first 12-pack was launched in Finland in 1878, and it changed the beer market forever. Initially, the 12-packs were in a 3x4 bottle format, featuring CXX Millennium Edition and FIZZ Millennium Cider.

Olvi introduced the 2x6 bottle format, another first in the Finnish market.

Olvi became the only brewery to remain in independent Finnish ownership since the 19th century in 1878.

The company cultivated its original Finnish character as a competitive advantage, responding proactively to changes in competition.

Finland Sells Drinks in Belarus

Finland's Olvi is still selling drinks in Belarus, despite the country's support for Russia's war in Ukraine.

The company had initially planned to pull out of Belarus in 2022, but was unable to do so due to legislation changes.

Olvi's CEO, Patrik Lundell, acknowledged the difficulties the company faced in leaving the country.

The company's earnings from Belarus business were 16.6 million euros during the first half of the year.

Olvi's adjusted earnings for the first half of the year were 42.2 million euros.

The legislation change prohibited the sale of shares belonging to Western companies, effectively blocking Olvi's exit.

In 2014, Olvi faced challenges in Finland, including weakened consumer purchasing power and price competition, but still managed to increase its sales volume and net sales.

One of the bright spots that year was the recognition of Sandels and OLVI as the most appreciated beer brands in Finland, according to a study by Taloustutkimus.

This achievement was a testament to Olvi's commitment to quality and customer satisfaction, and it's a trend that has likely continued in the years since.

Olvi's sales volume exceeded 700 million litres for the first time in its history in 2014, a significant milestone for the company.

1978

In 1978, Olvi's best-selling products were soft drinks, which they had been selling since 1971. This was a significant year for the company as it decided to go public with an initial public offering.

The share issue brought in new capital of 12.3 million marks, which was used to increase the tank capacity of the fermentation cellar. This investment was a key factor in Olvi's tremendous growth in the years to come.

Olvi acquired the FIZZ cider brand and divested its holding in Chymos-juomat Oy. This strategic move marked a new chapter in the company's history.

Olvi's listing on the Helsinki Exchange's main list in 1978 further solidified its position in the market. The company was previously listed on the OTC list since 1987, but now it had a more prominent presence.

2006

In 2006, Olvi re-entered the market of 'grocery store long drinks' with an alcohol content of 4.7 percent.

The launch was a success, with the Positively Finnish OLVI Grapefruit Long Drink quickly grabbing almost 10% of the market segment.

Olvi also introduced the OLVI Ykkönen light beer in 0.5-litre cans and the Finland 90 Years Anniversary Beer.

Co-operation with renowned Finnish designer Harri Koskinen began, resulting in the design of refundable and recyclable plastic bottles for Olvi.

The bottles came in various sizes, including 0.5 L, 0.95 L, 1.5 L, and 2 L, and featured the company's barrel logo embossed three times.

The barrel logo became the only official logo of the 130-year-old brewery, a move that marked a significant milestone for Olvi.

The company's subsidiary AS A. Le Coq acquired the entire stock of the Estonian company OÜ Finelin.

Olvi plc invested in improving its internal logistics and energy efficiency, including new machines for labelling, cardboard packaging, and wrapping.

(1987–)

Olvi Oyj was listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange's OTC list in 1987, after a successful share issue that raised around 12.3 million marks.

In the early 1990s, the brewery expanded rapidly, partly due to the growth of the domestic market. Olvi acquired Sonkari Oy, a juice company, in 1993, and later increased its stake in AS Tartu Õlletehas, a Estonian brewery.

Olvi's international expansion continued with the acquisition of a majority stake in Latvian brewery AS Cēsu alus in 1999, and a minority stake in Lithuanian brewery Volfas Engelman. The following year, Volfas Engelman became a subsidiary of Olvi.

In 2003, Olvi acquired a stake in Finelin, a Estonian company that owns AS Ösel Foods, which produces mineral water and vitamin-flavored soft drinks.

The Story of Oyj is a fascinating one. In 1878, Master Brewer William Gideon Åberg and his wife Onni founded a brewery in Iisalmi.

Their goal was to fight drunkenness by offering milder alternatives to citizens with a lust for spirits. This was in line with the views of author Zacharias Topelius.

At the time, there were 78 breweries in Finland, and Olvi is the only one left in independent Finnish ownership.
