MSNBC Changes and Acquisitions
In 1995, NBC and Microsoft formed a 50/50 joint venture to create MSNBC, which included the MSNBC cable channel and the MSNBC.com website.
The MSNBC Digital Network, which included msnbc.com, Today.com, NightlyNews.com, and BreakingNews.com, was a key part of the joint venture.
NBCUniversal acquired Microsoft's 50% share of the MSNBC Digital Network in 2012, giving NBC full ownership and control of the digital properties.
As a result of the acquisition, MSNBC.com was rebranded as NBCNews.com, and NBC News Digital will now be overseen by Vivian Schiller, senior VP and chief digital officer of NBC News.
The transition will also allow NBC to maximize its sales force, who will now sell both television and digital properties.
NBC plans to keep a substantial presence in the Seattle area, building the "NBC News Innovation Center" to focus on digital innovation and technology.
The deal was estimated to be worth around $300 million.
Microsoft's 50% stake in the MSNBC Digital Network was its last remaining joint venture with NBC News after selling its stake in the MSNBC cable channel to NBC in 2005.
