Project Overview

Aracruz Celulose's project scope is quite extensive, encompassing the entire flow of celulose from production in Guaíba, RS to its expedition in São José do Norte, RS.

The project involves transporting celulose from the factory to the port using barcaças, and then using navios to expedite the cargo from the terminal.

Barcaças play a crucial role in this process, with the model taking into account the time spent on maintenance at pontes-rolantes along the way.

The model also considers fluctuations in stock levels and the varying speeds of the barcaças across different sections of the Lagoa dos Patos.

This level of detail is impressive, and it's clear that a lot of thought has gone into optimizing the transportation process.

The model operates within an Excel interface, allowing users to easily adjust parameters and configure new scenarios as needed.

Resultados

Aracruz Celulose's simulation project was a huge success, and the results were nothing short of impressive. The model presented the following key performance indicators (KPIs) for each simulated scenario:

  • Ocupação das barcaças (occupation of the barges)
  • Ocupação das pontes rolantes (occupation of the rolling bridges)
  • Flutuação da carga disponível no armazém do porto e da fábrica (fluctuation of available cargo in the port and factory warehouses)
  • Total de toneladas produzidas pela fábrica (total tons produced by the factory)
  • Total de toneladas expedidas pelo porto (total tons shipped by the port)

These KPIs helped Aracruz Celulose determine the ideal number and capacity of the barges to meet the predicted demand before the port was even built. In other words, the simulation project allowed them to choose the best configuration for the barges' operation.

The results of the simulation project were crucial in ensuring that the port's infrastructure was designed to meet the company's needs.

Aracruz Celulose is planning a significant expansion, with a focus on the state of Espírito Santo. The plan includes building a fourth unit, which will produce around 1.4 million tons of cellulose annually.

The company is currently studying the construction of this new unit in Espírito Santo, where it already has three existing units producing 2.33 million tons of cellulose per year.

This expansion will require an additional 100,000 hectares of new eucalyptus plantations, on top of the 350,000 hectares already occupied by the eucalyptus in the state.

The eucalyptus is a thirsty crop, consuming 36.5 thousand liters of water per year when mature.
