Geography

Monette is located in northeastern Craighead County at (35.951450, -90.380010). U.S. Route 412 runs along the southern edge of the city, leading east 5mi to Manila and west 25mi to Jonesboro, the county seat. Arkansas Highway 18 passes through the center of Monette, leading north 10mi to Caraway and south 15mi to Lake City.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Monette has a total area of 4.0km2, of which 0.02sqkm, or 0.54%, are water. Monette is bordered to the south by Big Lake, a reservoir on North Fork Crow Creek.

History

Monette was incorporated as a town in 1902. The city was named for John Meredith Monette, one of the original owners of the town site. A post office has been in operation in Monette since 1902.

The Monette historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,520 people, 645 households, and 449 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,707.7 people per square mile (659.9/km^2).
