American Hustle tells the story of two con artists who are forced to work with a FBI agent in order to bring other criminals down. The main characters, Irving Rosenfeld and Sydney Prosser, are both smart, ambitious and very successful. Irving is an honest businessman who runs his own loan-brokering business when he is partnered up with the beautiful Sydney, he discovers that she has bigger and better plans for them—namely creating a long-term con. The plan is to lure high profile people into investing in fake businesses.

The problem arises when FBI Agent Richie DiMaso finds out about their scheme and wants to use it as a way to take down powerful political figures. In exchange for leniency on their crimes, DiMaso forces Irving and Sydney into working with him alongside other criminals including Carmine Polito - Mayor of Camden New Jersey whom they have tricked into investing in their fake business deals.

Given no choice but to cooperate or go behind bars for good; Irving, Sydney, DiMaso and Polito become entangled in an unpredictable web of crime; where motivations shift constantly resulting in twists that show just how deeply each party has been taken advantage of by the others.
