He joined the Guild the following year and paid his dues annually until his death.

During the 1560s Bruegel produced a number of enigmatic, moralizing works combining satirical with religious subjects. Many of these, such as The Seven Deadly Sins or the Mad Meg (both in the Museum of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp), are complex allegories with numerous iconic figures and dense, allusive detail.

From 1565 Bruegel turned to landscapes, initially concentrating on the Jacobszonen (journeyman class?) from Brabant. In early 1569 he moved to live near Nazareth, then a village outside Brussels, where he completed many of his finest works, including the Hunters in the Snow (1565, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna) and theNumbering at Bethlehem (1566, Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels). At the end of 1569 Bruegel returned to Brussels.
