James Lee founded the Millville glass works, which later became Whitall, Brother & Company in 1845. John M. Whitall was a partner in the business and worked at the company's headquarters in Philadelphia.

The company underwent several changes in ownership, with John M. Whitall retiring in 1865 and passing the ownership to his descendants. I.F. Whitall and Edward Tatum headed the company after John M. Whitall's retirement.

Whitall Tatum mass-produced special-order prescription bottles for hundreds of pharmacies, such as Smith & Hodgson in downtown Philadelphia. These bottles were embossed with the pharmacies' names and addresses and marked "W.T. & Co." on the base.
