Where Did Marguerite Live in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings?

Marguerite was born on December 21, 1918, in St. Agnes Hospital in White Plains, New York. Her parents were both French-Canadians who had come to the United States in search of work. Her father, Joseph, worked as a carpenter, and her mother, Marie, worked as a domestic servant.

When Marguerite was two years old, her family moved to Canada, where she grew up in the city of Montreal. She attended a Catholic school and later a business college. After graduation, she went to work as a secretary for a law firm.

When Marguerite was 16, the Charles family moved to France and Marguerite was left behind. Marguerite was heartbroken and she prayed that she would someday see Mrs. Charles again.

A few years later, Marguerite was working in a store in New Orleans when she met a man named Robert. Robert was a kind man and he treated Marguerite well. They fell in love and got married. Marguerite was finally happy.

Robert was drafted into the army and he was sent to fight in World War I. Marguerite was pregnant at the time and she was so worried about her husband. Robert was killed in the war and Marguerite was left alone with their child.

Marguerite moved to Chicago to be near her relatives. She got a job as a maid and she met a man named Alexander. Alexander was a good man and he treated Marguerite well. They got married and had a son. Marguerite was happy again.
