World's Largest Wind-Powered Vessel to Slash Shipping Emissions
The world's largest wind-powered vessel is being developed by Wallenius Marine, a Swedish shipping company. This massive ship, called the Oceanbird, will be able to transport 7,000 cars and trucks across the Atlantic, propelled only by the wind.
The Oceanbird will be twice as high as the largest comparable vessel, thanks to its five 80-metre-tall sails that protrude from its hull. These sails will make it the world's largest wind-powered vessel.
The ship's design is inspired by airplane wings, with solid fins made of steel and various composites that can rotate 360 degrees to optimize the angle depending on the wind direction. The wings are also telescopic, retracting to 60 metres to pass under bridges and mitigate turbulence.
The Oceanbird is expected to travel at a speed of 10 knots and take 12 days to cross the ocean, which is only four days longer than a carrier powered by fossil fuel. But it will emit 90% less CO2 in the process.
The shipping industry is a significant contributor to emissions, with 937 million tonnes of CO2 emitted in 2018 alone. This is more than all of Germany and would make the industry the sixth-largest emitter in the world if it were a country.
The Oceanbird project aims to mitigate the environmental impact of maritime freight transport, which accounts for all but 10% of trade worldwide. The ship is currently in the prototyping stage, with a seven-metre-tall model set to be trialled in Stockholm's harbour to gather data and optimize its performance and aerodynamics.
