History of Village Roadshow Studios

Village Roadshow Studios opened in 1986 and was originally built by DEL (Dino DeLaurentis). The studios were built before WB Movie World in 1991 and are adjacent to the Warner Bros. Movie World theme park.

The studios have a rich history, with many notable films being produced there over the years. One of the earliest films made at the studios was The Delinquents with Kylie Minogue in 1989.

In 1988, Village Roadshow purchased DEL and took over the facility. This marked a new era for the studios, with Village Roadshow bringing its own expertise and resources to the table.

A major highlight for the studios was the production of Thor: Ragnarok in 2017, which was shot at the Village Roadshow studios on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane.

Despite their physical proximity and operational links, the studios and theme park are separate entities. This means that the theme park and studios' management have no involvement with productions, and don't recommend cast, crew or extras.

Here are some notable films that have been produced at the Village Roadshow studios:

  • The Delinquents (1989)
  • Roar (1997)
  • Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

The studios have undergone significant growth and development over the years, with a focus on hosting big American films. However, they also face challenges, with the studio president, Lynne Benzie, citing a small staff as one of the biggest challenges.
