Labor Issues at Trader Joe's

Preventing workers from wearing union insignia is one such example. An administrative law judge found that Trader Joe's unlawfully prohibited workers at a store in Hadley, Massachusetts, from wearing union pins.

Workers at the Hadley store voted to join Trader Joe's United in July 2022, making it the first location in the chain to unionize.

Trader Joe's supervisors told workers they had to remove pins supporting the union drive or leave work. Two workers chose to leave their shifts ahead of schedule rather than remove their pins.

The company's actions went against the law, as employees have a right to wear union buttons and other insignia at work.

Trader Joe's has also engaged in delay tactics to avoid negotiating with union representatives. They've brought up irrelevant issues, refused to engage in good faith, and demanded in-person representatives while not providing their own.

Trader Joe's even offered lower retirement benefits to unionized stores.
