TelecityGroup was founded in 1992 in London, England.

The company started out as a small data center operator, but over the years it has grown to become one of the largest independent data center operators in Europe.

TelecityGroup operates a network of 32 data centers across Europe, with locations in the UK, Germany, France, and the Netherlands.

These data centers span over 230,000 square meters of space, providing a total of 100,000 square meters of raised floor space.

Telecity Group Enters Helsinki Market

TelecityGroup acquired Tenue Oy, one of Finland's leading providers of carrier-neutral data centres, for £3.7 million in cash.

The acquisition provides TelecityGroup with one of the most connected data centres in Helsinki, boasting about 1 megawatt of current customer capacity.

TelecityGroup also gains access to another facility under construction in Helsinki, which will offer a further 4 megawatts of space.

Helsinki is an emerging internet hub city within the Nordic region, offering easy access to Russia and the Baltic countries.

The city has become known for innovative data center design, incorporating underground district heating system and sea-water cooling.

A recent survey by Cushman & Wakefield highlighted growing interest in the Nordic countries as data center destinations.

The colder climate in Scandinavian countries allows for increased use of free cooling, reducing reliance on mechanical cooling.

TelecityGroup sees Helsinki as an important gateway to the market for data center services in Russia.

CEO Michael Tobin noted significant demand from customers for high quality, connected data centre services with proximity to the growing Russian market.

Equinix has closed its acquisition of TelecityGroup, a European data center services giant, for a whopping $3.8 billion.

This deal makes Equinix the largest data center provider in Europe, at least for the foreseeable future. The acquisition increases Equinix's data center portfolio by 30 percent, taking it from 111 to 145 data centers.

The Telecity acquisition gives Equinix control over many more interconnection hubs in Europe, where network operators, web content companies, cloud service providers, and enterprises interconnect their networks and exchange traffic.

Equinix leadership believes there is still huge untapped business potential in being a data center intermediary between the enterprise IT shop and the cloud.

The deal prevented Equinix from becoming stuck in a number-two position in the European market, which would have made it nearly impossible for Equinix to ever get to the number-one position in Europe.

Equinix gained about 1,000 net new customers, including more than 200 network and mobility companies, and about 300 cloud and IT service providers.

The acquisition also gives Equinix presence in smaller markets where it hasn’t been before, such as Dublin, Helsinki, Istanbul, Milan, Sofia, Stockholm, and Warsaw.
