Superior Oil Company was acquired by Mobil in 1984.
In October 1983, Howard B. Keck stepped down as a director, controlling 18.4 percent of the company, and announced his intention to sell his stake.
Howard Keck's sister, Willametta Keck Day, had led a stockholder revolt in April 1983, resulting in changes to Superior's bylaws.

The Keck family owned about 22 percent of Superior's stock and approached Mobil with an offer to sell their shares in late 1983.
Mobil secretly agreed to buy the Keck family's 22 percent stake in March 1984, offering the remaining stockholders the same price of $45 a share.
Superior Oil was acquired by Mobil for $5.7 billion in March 1984, becoming the nation's largest independent oil producer.
The acquisition was completed in September 1984, with Superior becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Mobil.
The takeover was the fifth-largest oil merger in history, with combined sales of over $60 billion.
In February 1985, Mobil announced plans to sell an unprofitable Idaho gold mine it had acquired with Superior.
