Sunshine Kaidi New Energy Group, a Chinese renewable energy giant, is planning to invest €1 billion in a new wood-based biodiesel plant in Finland. The plant will be located in the northern city of Kemi and is scheduled to start operations by the end of 2019.

Kaidi has formed a local company, Kaidi Finland, to establish the project, which it calls the first of its kind in the world. It will produce 200,000 metric tons of fuel per year, with 75% being diesel and 25% gasoline.

The plant will use the Fischer-Tropsch process, which was developed by Germany during World War II to make transportation fuels from biomass. This process requires a large, expensive gasifier to convert organic matter into synthesis gas.

Finland has a lot of trees, with its forestry industry in decline due to the fall in global demand for paper products. Kaidi's CEO, Chen Yilong, says that Finland is the most interesting country to invest in for biofuels production in the Northern hemisphere.

The plant is expected to employ around 4,000 people during its construction, providing a boost to the economy. This is particularly welcome, as the country has lost thousands of jobs in the past decade due to paper mills closing down.

Kaidi operates about 30 biomass plants in China and Vietnam, and the Kemi plant will be its first in Europe. The company is attracted by Finland's vast forests and government subsidies.

The European Union has set a target to obtain 0.5% of fuel from advanced biofuel processes such as gasification. Last year, 22.6% of biodiesel used in the EU was imported, highlighting the demand for biofuels in the region.
