De-merger activities are a significant aspect of business operations, and SunGard is a prime example of how companies can undergo significant changes through de-mergers.

In December 2010, Capita Group plc acquired SunGard Public Sector Holdings Ltd for £86 million, renaming it Capita Secure Information Systems, which is now known as Capita Secure Managed Services.

SunGard's Higher Education group combined with Datatel in August 2011, with John Speer as CEO, and was acquired by affiliates of private equity firm Hellman & Friedman LLC for US$1.775 billion, forming the new company Ellucian.

The proposed combination cleared Department of Justice review on December 7, 2011, and was finalized in March 2012, alleviating SunGard's total debt of US$8.08 billion but resulting in a projected annual revenue shortage of $580 million.

SunGard completed the split-off of its Availability Services business in March 2014, forming the independent company Sungard AS, led by Andy Stern.

In 2015, SunGard was acquired by the FIS company, and in February 2017, Vista Equity Partners acquired SunGard's Public Sector and Education businesses from FIS, renaming and rebranding SunGard Public Sector as Superion by April 2017.
