BDFI co-produces a conference on slave traders Sandbach Tinne, bringing together researchers, historians, and archivists from across the UK to present their findings.

The conference explored how extensive archives, extending to Guyana, the US, and elsewhere, could be made accessible to a wider audience using immersive technology.

Curated by Malik Al Nasir, who has traced his ancestry to the Sandbach Tinne family, the conference was made possible by a collaboration with the University's Pro Vice-Chancellor of Research and Enterprise, Philip Taylor, and the Bristol Digital Futures Institute, led by Professor Dimitra Simeonidou.

Day 1 of the conference took place at Bristol Museums M Shed, where a range of speakers presented new insights into Sandbach Tinne's life, business, and political activities.

Talks ranged from the family's art collections to their estate purchases in Scotland and Caribbean trading routes.

Alice Kinghorn presented research revealing Sandbach Tinne's long-standing connections to Bristol, including their business dealings with Joseph Beete of Clifton and the Bristol West India Association.

Prof. Philip Taylor praised the conference, saying it gave a fascinating insight into this important part of history, and that Malik's research has exposed previously unseen archives and evidence showing the role that Sandbach Tinne played in transporting and trading enslaved people.

Prof. Dimitra Simeonidou looked forward to exploring how immersive technologies can be used to share historic archives more widely and accessibly in the future.
