RWJBarnabas Health has been actively pursuing acquisitions and partnerships to expand its services and improve patient care. In October 2019, the health system signed a letter of intent to acquire Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Trinitas would retain its core Catholic ideologies and continue to maintain its affiliation with the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth. This acquisition was finalized on January 6, 2022, with Trinitas officially becoming part of RWJBarnabas Health.

RWJBarnabas Health also explored a merger with Saint Peter's Healthcare System in late 2019. The preliminary plan called for significant investments in Saint Peter's to expand its outpatient services.

The merger with Saint Peter's was signed on September 10, 2020, and would have created the largest academic medical center in the state. However, the Federal Trade Commission blocked the merger on June 2, 2022, citing concerns that it would reduce competition and harm patients.

The merger was ultimately terminated on June 14, 2022, after the agreement was cancelled by both parties.
