19th and 20th Centuries

Ransomes began building "Orwells", a brand of battery-electric commercial road vehicles, during the First World War.

They also manufactured aeroplanes, producing 350 Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2b fighters, which were built in a large 2.5-acre building on their site.

After the war, aeroplane production ceased, and the aeroplane shop was used for producing Orwell battery lorries from January 1919.

Ransomes added trolleybuses to their portfolio in 1924, continuing production until 1948, and selling them in Britain and abroad.

Their forklift line was sold to Hawkins Mechanical Handling in the early 1980s, which produced machines under the Hamech Ransomes brand name.

Ransomes also made electric stillage-carrying trucks for use in factories.

In 1989, the whole of the agricultural implement business was sold to Electrolux and merged with their subsidiary Överum.

A pre-drilled but unused hole for fixing a cast iron moon plaque is often present on the Moon model, suggesting that the original owner may not have wanted or needed the additional expense.

Clive Gravett's research on the records suggests that the lawnmower in question is a variant of the original Ransomes Moon, although it bears a resemblance to the 1950s Ransomes Ripper with a wooden handle.

The stamp numbers on the cylinder blades, 33/34, are believed to be the year of manufacture, which would place the Moon model in the 1930s.

The body shape of the side frame on the Moon model differs from the 50's Ripper, which can help to identify it as a genuine Moon model.

Styles

The business that would eventually become Ransomes, Sims & Jefferies Limited had a few different names over the years. The company was started by Robert Ransome in 1789 as a sole trader.

One of the earliest names was Ransome & Son, which was used from 1809 when Robert's son James joined the business. This partnership lasted until 1818 when Robert's other sons James and Robert joined the company.

J & R Ransome was another name used from 1823, when James and Robert Ransome were the owners. A few years later, in 1830, the company became J R and A Ransome, with James, Robert, and James's son Allen also involved.

The company's name changed several times over the next few decades. In 1835, it became Ransomes & May, with Charles May joining the partnership. May was later replaced by William Dillwyn Sims in 1852, when the company became Ransomes & Sims.

Restoration and Activation

The Ransomes, Sims & Jefferies portable steam engine underwent a remarkable restoration process in 1981-82. The Museum commissioned the Canberra Society of Model and Experimental Engineers to bring it back to life.

Led by Stan Hennock, the team meticulously stripped the boiler, repaired broken fittings, and replaced missing parts, including the chimney. They even repainted the engine in its original colors, a vibrant green, red, and yellow.

A small electric motor was cleverly attached to the engine to simulate its operation without the need for steam. This allows visitors to see the engine in motion without the risk of damage.

The Museum's engineering consultants, Col Ogilvie and Ian Stewart, developed a plan to adapt the engine for display. They tested the motion of the wheel, crankshaft, and pistons to determine the best way to showcase the engine's regular action.

To achieve this, a rubber belt was looped over two pulleys, with the drive pulley attached to the motor and a larger pulley attached to the engine's crankshaft extension. This clever setup simulates the engine's motion at a slower pace, showing the flywheel, governor, and pistons moving at three rotations per minute.
