Keeping your Venmo transactions private is easier than you think. According to Venmo's policies, transactions are public by default, but you can change this setting to keep your transactions private.

To start, go to your Venmo settings and toggle the "What Venmo knows" toggle switch to the "Private" position. This will keep your transactions private, but you'll still be able to see your own transaction history.

Venmo also allows you to customize who can see your transactions. You can choose to share your transactions with friends, or keep them private from everyone. This setting can be found in the "Privacy" section of your Venmo settings.

Setting Up Privacy

Setting up privacy on Venmo is a straightforward process. To change your default privacy setting, tap the cog icon in the top right corner to open the settings menu, and under Default privacy settings, make sure you select the bubble next to Private.

This will make sure transactions are only visible to you and the person who's paying or receiving money from you. To protect everything from the past, tap Past transactions on the privacy menu and select Change all to private.

You can also manually change each payment to private when you make a payment by selecting from a small drop-down menu. However, there's no reason to have these payments public, so it's best to change your default setting.

Here are the three privacy options available for your payments:

  • Public: Anyone on the internet may be able to see the transaction
  • Friends only: The transaction will only be shared with your Venmo friends and with the other participant’s Venmo friends
  • Private: We will not share the transaction anywhere other than in your personal transactions feed under the Me tab and with the other participant

If you select Private for your payments, your Venmo activity will remain private - only visible to you and any other payment participants. If your payment partner has a more restrictive privacy setting, Venmo will use that setting instead.

Transaction Information

Transaction information on Venmo is quite transparent, but you can control who sees it. All payment participants can see the amount, note, names of sender/recipient, and timestamp of the payment.

The sender of the payment can see the payment method used, but only the sender. This is a one-way street, so to speak.

If your payment is set to Public or Friends, the payment note, names of sender/recipient, and timestamp of the payment will be shared with the public or your friends, respectively.

Here's a quick rundown of what you can control:

To make your Venmo transactions private, you can change the default privacy setting to Private. This will affect future payments, but you'll also want to hide past payments.

Browser and App Transactions

Making these changes will only affect future payments you make on Venmo, so you may want to hide the payments you already made as well.

To make all of your Venmo transactions private, you can open the app, tap the three lines in the upper right corner for the menu, tap Settings > Privacy, and under Default Privacy Setting, tap Private.

One benefit of Cash App is that all transactions are private by default, so you may want to consider using that instead.

To change the privacy settings for past transactions, you can go to the Privacy page, under more, tap Past Transactions, and select Change to Friends or Change All to Private.

  2. Select the “me” tab.
  3. Tap the settings icon (gear) in the top right corner
  4. Tap on “privacy.“

Data Usage and Protection

Venmo will use some of your data even if you've set your account to private. This includes sharing your contact information, date of sign-up, and other metrics with the person or company you're sending or receiving money from.

Venmo's privacy policy states that it shares this information to help with fraud prevention. This means that even if you've taken steps to prevent others from seeing your transactions, Venmo can still share your data with third parties.

The average user checks Venmo 2-3 times per week, and it's not just for payments, but also to see what their friends and family are doing. This level of engagement is what sets Venmo apart from others in the space.

To better ensure your security, both Venmo and Cash App use encryption and fraud detection technology to protect account information.

Why and How

Under the default privacy settings, Venmo displays a lot of information about your transactions. Experts have confirmed this can be used to determine your friends, marriage status, places you visit, when and how often you go somewhere, and even your likes and hobbies.

This information is too revealing, and it's not just a minor issue. In 2018, Venmo-based experiments showed that even with just the information Venmo displays by default, it's possible to gather a pretty accurate picture of your life.

Here are some of the specific ways your default Venmo settings can give away too much information:

  • Your friends.
  • Your marriage status.
  • The places you visit.
  • When/how often you go somewhere.
  • Your likes and hobbies.

Why Set?

Setting Venmo to private is a no-brainer, especially when you consider how much information is revealed by default.

Your friends can easily find out who you're making transactions with, which can be a problem if you're trying to keep some things private.

By keeping your Venmo payments private, you can avoid sharing your marriage status with the world.

The places you visit and how often you go somewhere can also be easily determined, which can be a concern if you're trying to keep your personal life private.

Venmo-based experiments in 2018 confirmed that even with default settings, a lot of information can be gathered about you.

Here are some things that can be determined from your Venmo transactions:

  • Your friends.
  • Your marriage status.
  • The places you visit.
  • When/how often you go somewhere.
  • Your likes and hobbies.

This information can be useful for advertisers and scammers, which is why setting Venmo to private is so important.

So What?

So what? The details of your transactions are public, and you might not even know it.

The total amount of each payment isn't broadcast to everyone, but the information can reveal where people were at particular times.

You might unknowingly share things that could get you in trouble, like a transaction about betting or a payment for drinking late on a work night.

Employers might see this information and it could impact your job.

Transactions can even give away details like where you plan to go on vacation.

You could be living with someone and they might be able to see your transactions, revealing your personal life.
