Latvian Railways, also known as Latvijas dzelzceļš Group, has a complex company structure that has evolved over the years.

The company was formed in 1992, after Latvia regained its independence, with 2,364 kilometres of railway lines and 23,000 employees.

In 1993, the state enterprise Latvijas dzelzceļš was reformed into a state-owned joint-stock company, with the Latvian state owning all shares.

The first subsidiary of the Latvijas dzelzceļš Group was established in 2001, as the LDz's passenger services division, which later became a 100% state-owned independent joint-stock company called Vivi in 2023.

SIA Dzelzceļa Apsardze, a subsidiary providing security for LDz's rail infrastructure, was established in 2003 and later renamed SIA LDZ Apsardze in 2007.

In 2005, three new subsidiaries were established within the Latvijas dzelzceļš Group: SIA LDZ Cargo, SIA LDZ Infrastruktūra, and SIA LDZ Ritošā Sastāva Serviss.

By 2008, the subsidiary SIA LDZ Loģistika was established to separate logistics services from cargo services.

To ensure the essential functions of the infrastructure manager, joint-stock LatRailNet was established in 2010.

Freight Services
