During her time at Boğaziçi Üniversitesi, she worked with Gülay Barbarosoğlu, who was both the müdür (director) of Kandilli Rasathanesi and Deprem Araştırma Enstitüsü and the bölüm başkanı (department head) of Endüstri Mühendisliği. Erkan considers Barbarosoğlu to be one of her most important akıl hocası (mentors) and the person who encouraged her to continue her career in the United States.

She completed her bölümü (department) with birincilik (first place) in 2001 and received burs teklifleri (scholarship offers) from nine universities, including Stanford and Kaliforniya Üniversitesi.
