Grimm & Co. is a writing community that offers a unique approach to writing and creativity.

Grimm & Co. was founded by Kate Sawyer and Tom Fletcher, who were both authors and educators. They aimed to provide a supportive and inclusive environment for writers of all ages and skill levels.

The community is built around a mysterious shop, where members can post "wishes" for writing help or feedback. This system allows writers to connect with others who can offer guidance and support.

Members can post their wishes on the shop's noticeboard, which is a public forum for writers to share their work and receive feedback.

Grimm & Co offers a range of group activities that are perfect for kids and families. They have a pop-up shop in the Old Town Hall in Rotherham town centre, where you can visit and experience the magic for yourself.

Their Apothecary is a wonderful experience, with a fairy tale mail service, a library of forgotten books, and a magic-o-meter. You can also explore the museum of artefacts from the Fairy Tale Kingdom and browse their beautiful, artisan magical gifts.

Grimm & Co has been open since 1148, and they serve all kinds of magical beings, including wizards, giants, fairies, and trolls. They offer a wide range of products, including potions, human disguises, and enchanted wood.

Their charitable work is funded by an unbreakable spell, and it's done through the SECRET DOOR. This takes place through the Writers' Pad, which hosts story making and creative writing workshops for school groups and free holiday clubs for children and young people.

You can also join their team as a volunteer mentor, where you can encourage confidence, creativity, and imagination while developing writing skills in a unique, fantastical environment. No experience is required, just bags of enthusiasm!

Overview

Grimm & Co was founded by Deborah Bullivant, who was asked by Rotherham Council to lead a study into creative literacy approaches in 2009.

The study, conducted alongside the University of Sheffield, discovered that one-on-one mentoring and creative stimuli were the most effective way to improve literacy skills.

Bullivant's findings led to the 'Inspire Rotherham' model, which was trialled across all primary schools in Rotherham, resulting in improved English Reading and Writing Key Stage 2 attainment levels within a year.

Grimm & Co's Apothecary opened in 2016, after Bullivant secured funding from Arts Council England to create a partner organisation for Yorkshire with the theme of an apothecary for magical beings.

The organisation has since received further funding from the Arts Council and plans to move its writing centre to a new Grade II-listed premises in 2021.

Grimm & Co has offered workshops to 10,837 children and young people from across the north of England since opening.

The organisation is supported by over 150 volunteers and has a number of notable patrons, including authors and actors.

Grimm & Co has also received funding from the education charity SHINE, which allowed them to build a portable experience that was taken into seven different schools in South Yorkshire.
