Gofundme laid off thousands of employees in 2023, with some reports suggesting as many as 15% of the company's workforce was let go. This move was a shock to many, especially considering the company's previous growth and success.

The layoffs were announced in a company-wide email, with employees being notified that their positions had been eliminated due to "restructuring efforts." This vague explanation left many employees feeling uncertain and concerned about their future.

Gofundme's CEO, Yessie Hernández, has stated that the company is focused on becoming more efficient and effective, which led to the decision to reduce the workforce. However, this explanation has not been enough to ease the concerns of many employees who are now facing an uncertain future.

GoFundMe Layoffs

The GoFundMe for laid-off Democratic Party staffers has raised thousands of dollars. Nearly $19,000 has been donated to the "DNC Staff Union Layoff Relief Fund" since it was created on November 20.

The fundraising campaign was set up by the union representing members of the DNC. The goal is to raise $25,000.

Workers were laid off abruptly with no severance pay. Two-thirds of DNC staff were let go with "little notice" earlier this month.

The funds raised from this GoFundMe are not a replacement for the severance the union is still fighting for. DNC Staff Union's Jill Brownfield made this clear on the GoFundMe page.

The money raised will go directly to recently laid-off staff members. It will be distributed equally to anyone who opts in to receive the funds.

The union is furious with DNC leadership for failing to provide severance. They're also heartbroken to see their colleagues depart under these circumstances.

They hope to help those who "don't have a safety net for support while we look for a new job." Organizers will distribute the funds equally among staffers via their preferred payment app.

The campaign has raised nearly $10,000 from over 120 donations, including $500 each from former digital editor-in-chief Michelle Gotthelf and chief Wall Street correspondent Ben White.

A similar GoFundMe campaign, the "DNC Staff Union Layoff Relief Fund", has raised nearly $19,000 for recently laid-off workers at the Democratic National Committee.

The funds raised will go directly to staff members and will be distributed equally to anyone who opts in to receive the funds.

The DNC Staff Union is still fighting for severance pay for the laid-off workers, and the GoFundMe is not a replacement for this.

The campaign was set up by the union representing members of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), after the party's leadership was accused of "callous and short-sighted mismanagement".

The funds raised are not intended to replace severance pay, but rather to provide some financial support to those who were laid off with little notice.

Around two-thirds of DNC staff were let go earlier this month, with no severance pay provided.

The union is still fighting for severance pay for the affected staff members, citing the example of those who were let go from Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign team, who received three weeks of severance.
