History of DICN
DICON was established in 1964 through an act of parliament in the Nigerian National Assembly. This marked the beginning of the corporation's journey towards becoming a leading force in Nigeria's defense industry.
Major General Victor Okwudili Ezugwu was appointed as DICON's director-general from 2018 to March 2021. He played a significant role in the corporation's development during his tenure.
Major General MO Uzoh took over as director-general in March 2021, followed by Major General HG Tafida in July 2021, and then Major General AE Edet in July 2023. Each of these leaders contributed to the corporation's growth and progress.
DICON unveiled its first armored vehicle, the Ezugwu MRAP, on October 3, 2019. The MRAP was designed in collaboration with the Nigerian Army Command Engineering Depot and was named after Major General Victor Ezugwu.
Major General Babatunde Ibrahim Alaya took over as the 25th Director General (DG) of DICON on April 30, 2025, following a formal handover ceremony.

The Kaduna Ordnance Factories had the capacity to produce 5,000 units of BM 59 Rifles, 18,000 units of SMG 12, and 12,000,000 rounds of 7.62mm x 51 per annum.
DICON's equipment was later used to produce civilian items like rural water supply equipment, industrial spare parts, and furniture for sale to the public after the war in 1970.
The Federal Government signed an agreement with Steyr Daimler Puch AG (Defence Division) of Austria in 1979 to construct a factory building in Bauchi for the production of Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC).
The factory was designed to assemble 300 units of 2 axles (4×4) Pinzgauer and 200 units of 3 axles (6×6) Pinzgauer per year, with a 1 ton and 1.5 ton payload respectively.
DICON successfully produced prototype medium range weapons, including the 60mm mortar, 81mm mortar, and the RPG-7 in 2004.
