What is CDCVM

CDCVM, or Canine Distemper Virus Modified, is a modified live virus vaccine.

CDCVM is a combination vaccine that also protects against other diseases such as parvovirus and adenovirus.

The Issuer Pay library supports several CDCVM types, but the selection process is quite specific. It happens at library initialization.

The library checks if on-device authentication is enabled and set up by the user before registering. If it is, the library will choose a CDCVM type accordingly.

In some cases, the library won't select any CDCVM type if the wallet application is configured to use the Card Like model. This means you won't have to worry about CDCVM type selection in those scenarios.

The selected CDCVM type is sent to WSP in the registration request, and it can't be changed after registration.

Solutions for Contactless Device Verification (CDCVM) must meet a set of security requirements established by EMVCo.

These requirements can be implemented at different levels, including the device level, where the device manufacturer must ensure that resources used for CVM execution are in compliance with security requirements from data capture to authentication result delivery to a trusted application.

The pandemic has accelerated the growth of contactless transactions, which are still mostly made with contactless cards.

The protection against fraudulent use of the resource is a top priority, to prevent the result of the CDCVM from being tampered with, disabled, ignored, falsified or used maliciously.

The EMVCo has published a document called "CDCVM Security Requirements" to address this concern.

The EMVCo created the "EMV Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method—Best Practices" document to balance user experience, security, and the enablement of one or more CDCVMs in a consumer device. This document is a game-changer for merchants and consumers alike.

The best practices are organized into three groups. The EMVCo has a clear vision for what works and what doesn't when it comes to CDCVMs.

One of these groups focuses on the usability of CDCVMs, ensuring that they are easy to use and understand for consumers.

Strong authentication can shift the responsibility of fraud away from merchants. This means that if a transaction is authorized through a certified wallet, the merchant is not liable for any resulting fraud.

The use of CDCVM in strong authentication can also streamline the transaction process. By allowing merchants to use the first verification method supported by both the terminal and the device, it can speed up transactions and reduce the risk of errors.

The EMVCo has created a document called "EMV Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method—Best Practices" to define guidelines for balancing user experience, security, and enabling one or more CDCVMs in a consumer device.

This document is organized into three groups of best practices.

The EMVCo is working on a standard for a Identification Database of CDCVM solutions to provide a strong authentication infrastructure and visibility into the authentication process for issuers.

Each registered CDCVM solution receives a unique identifier called an EMV CDCVM Solution ID, along with a set of related metadata stored in the database.

This allows issuers to access the related metadata with a single value, enabling them to access the metadata of the CDCVM solution.

The EMVCo plans to conduct a pilot of these specifications in 2021.

The development of the CDCVM and ID Database specifications is being done in collaboration with the Global Platform and FIDO Alliance working groups.
