The Caisse populaire, a community-focused financial institution, was indeed suspicious of Vincent Lacroix's dealings. They had reason to be, given the large sums of money being transferred through a Norbourg account.

Denis Senécal, the Caisse Desjardins de La Prairie's director general, had been monitoring the account since 1998 and became increasingly wary of the transactions. A whopping $28.8 million in irregular withdrawals had passed through the Northern Trust account to the Caisse populaire account in La Prairie.

Senécal took it upon himself to verify the large sums being deposited into the account, even going so far as to make it a systematic process for any transaction over $50,000. This was partly due to the risk of accepting checks without sufficient funds.

However, a call from Sécurité Desjardins in the spring of 2004 forced Senécal to reevaluate his approach. He was informed that large deposits from La Prairie were being sent to a personal account belonging to Vincent Lacroix at the Banque Nationale. This, combined with the fact that a corporate Norbourg account was located in La Prairie, raised more red flags.

The Caisse populaire's director general ultimately decided to close the account, sending a letter to Lacroix on April 15, 2004, stating that the account would be closed within 10 days.
