Bodegas Torres has a rich history that spans over 170 years, dating back to 1870 when Jaime Torres founded the bodega in Vilafranca del Penedès, Spain.

Jaime Torres was a visionary entrepreneur who recognized the potential of the Penedès region for producing high-quality wines.

The bodega quickly gained a reputation for producing exceptional wines, particularly its iconic Mas La Plana, which was first released in 1969.

Bodegas Torres has remained family-owned and operated for six generations, with current president Miguel Torres leading the company.

Under Miguel's leadership, Bodegas Torres has continued to innovate and expand its operations, while staying true to its roots and commitment to quality.

History of Torres

Jaime Torres emigrated to Cuba in 1855, making his fortune through the oil industry and seaborne trade. He returned home in 1870 a rich man and went into business with his brother, a wine grower.

The family company was founded in 1870 in Vilafranca del Penedès, with Jaime Torres' vision of building a massive 600,000-litre wine vat, the largest in the world.

Miguel Torres Carbó, a fourth generation family member, rebuilt the winery in 1940 after it was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. He brought an end to the sale of bulk wine and started marketing it in labelled bottles.

Miguel Torres traveled to the United States in 1940 to promote the winery's wines, as France was unable to provide wine due to Hitler's control. This was a pivotal moment in the winery's history, leading to the creation of brands like Sangre de Toro, Viña Sol, and Coronas.

In 1966, the winery began planting imported grape varieties like Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot noir, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer. This marked a significant shift in the winery's focus towards international grape varieties.

The winery's Riesling was named in honour of Waltraud Maczassek, Miguel A. Torres' wife, a German artist who collaborated in the sale of Torres wines on the German market.

Miguel A. Torres took over as President and Managing Director of the winery in 1991, following the death of his father, Miguel Torres.
