
B.C. Forbes was a Scottish-American journalist and author who spent most of his life in the United States.
He was born on November 11, 1880, in Dingwall, Ross-shire, Scotland.
Forbes grew up in a family of modest means and was the youngest of six children.
He moved to the United States in 1904, settling in New York City.
Life and Career
B.C. Forbes was born in New Deer, Aberdeenshire, on May 14, 1880. He studied at the University of Dundee.
Forbes worked as a reporter and editorial writer with a local Dundee newspaper until 1901, when he moved to Johannesburg, South Africa. He founded the "Rand Daily Mail" in Johannesburg.
In 1904, Forbes emigrated to New York City, where he was employed as a writer and financial editor at the "Journal of Commerce". He later joined the Hearst chain of newspapers as a syndicated columnist in 1911.
B.C. Forbes left Hearst after two years to become the business and financial editor at the "New York American", a position he held until 1916. He founded "Forbes magazine" in 1917.
Forbes remained Editor-in-Chief of Forbes magazine until his death in 1954, assisted by his two eldest sons, Bruce Charles Forbes and Malcolm Stevenson Forbes.
