Roopal Thakkar has been appointed as the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) at AbbVie. He will lead the company's global R&D organization of more than 14,000 team members across all phases of discovery and development.
Dr. Thakkar has a deep commitment to innovation and patient care, which is reflected in his previous roles at AbbVie, including Vice President, Global Regulatory Affairs and R&D Quality Assurance. He has also held positions in clinical development, including Group Project Director, Immunology.
In his new role, Dr. Thakkar will be responsible for the six major R&D centers of excellence located across the United States, Germany, and Japan. He will also focus on driving pipeline advancement across therapeutics and aesthetics.

New CSO's Background
Dr Thakkar joined Abbott/AbbVie in 2003 and has progressed through several positions in clinical development.
He trained in internal medicine and was clinical fellow at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
Dr Thakkar obtained his bachelor’s degree in cellular and molecular biology from the University of Michigan.
He also holds an MD from the Wayne State University School of Medicine, US.
Dr Thakkar has held various leadership roles within the company, including group project director, immunology, and vice president and global regulatory affairs.
In 2019, Dr Thakkar took on the role of vice president, global regulatory affairs and R&D quality assurance, and in 2022 he was appointed as senior vice president, development and regulatory affairs and chief medical officer.
As Executive Vice President, Research & Development and Chief Scientific Officer, AbbVie, Dr Thakkar is also responsible for the six major R&D centres of excellence located across the US, Germany, and Japan.

Dr. Hudson joined AbbVie in 2016 and oversaw oncology discovery and early development before assuming the role of vice president, discovery research.
He was appointed to the role of Chief Scientific Officer in 2019.
Dr. Thakkar assumed the role of vice president, global regulatory affairs and R&D quality assurance in 2019, and was later appointed to the role of senior vice president, development and regulatory affairs and Chief Medical Officer in 2022.
